Maritime Skills Academy was set up in September 2023 to allow our children to access a variety of extra-curricular activities - activities that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to experience – thereby extending learning and social opportunities for children to experience and thrive within.
The first Skills Academy was run from Greenacres Primary School in Greenwich on a Saturday morning and provided a range of activities for 50 children from the local community over 30 weeks. We are thrilled to say that our second Skills Academy opened in September 2024 at Featherby School, within our Medway Hub, offering the same range of activities thereby more than doubling the number of children each week getting to benefit from a wide set of extra curricular activities.
Each location offers the following workshops:
- A robotics club run by a team of coders, engineers and scientists from Engineering Minds, an organisation focussing on encouraging under-represented groups to develop an interest in science, engineering, technology and maths.
- Drama sessions, which helped to develop performing, public speaking, dance and expression
- Sports coaching delivered in partnership with Inspire Sports Skills, which expanded children's opportunities and experiences of a range of different sports
- Art club where the children explored 'large art', sculpture and textiles
Offering activities like sports and drama are great ways of developing the children’s confidence and self-esteem. We make sure everyone is welcome and well cared for.
